Qantas will begin an international jet service between

Port Moresby and South East Asia in September. The service will

operate from Sydney to Hong Kong through Port Moresby and Manila.

This was announced jointly today by the Minister for

Civil Aviation, Mr. R.W. Swartz and the Minister for Territories,

Mr. C.E. Barnes.

Mr. Swartz and the Director—General of Civil Aviation,

Mr. D.G. Anderson, recently returned from a six day tour of the

Territory's aviation facilities. The Minister said the

resumption of an international service through Port Moresby

would fulfil a need long felt by the Territory.

It followed talks between the two Ministers and strong

representations by the Administrator and residents of Papua/

New Guinea.

The Minister said approval had been given for a weekly,

each way Boeing 707 service through Port Moresby. This would

give the people of the Territory a direct link with other round the

the world services. It would also encourage a greater flow of

international visitors to Papua/New Guinea.

The Ministers added that international passengers

flying through Port Moresby by Qantas could stop over in the

Territory. However, Qantas would not carry domestic passengers

between Sydney and Port Moresby.
