Member for Wannon - David Hawker - has welcomed the new Government package that will benefit 3,633 veterans in the electorate of Wannon.

Mr. Hawker said this was strong evidence of the Federal Government’s commitment to the veteran community in Australia.

The Government this week announced a $267 million package, in response to the independent Review of Veteran’s Entitlement, the Clarke Report.

“This new package shows a strong commitment to look after those who served their country in the armed forces and their families,” Mr. Hawker said.

“Several measures have been established from the Clarke Committee’s report to help veterans and their families on veteran’s entitlements.

“Firstly, the veteran’s disability pension paid by Centrelink will be exempt from the means test which is applied to income support payments. This will give veterans up to an additional $257.60 a fortnight.

“Furthermore, the Government has de cided to index the above general rate component of the disability pension by the Consumer Price Index or Male Total Average Weekly Earnings, which ever is higher.

“An addition in rent assistance for war widows of up to $94.40 a fortnight will also be introduce d.”

Mr. Hawker said the Government had also increased the fune ral benefit from $572 to $1,000 and had implemented an ex gratia payment of $25,000 to surviving Prisoners of War of the North Koreans, or their widows.

“The Government will continue to provide special recognition and comprehensive help to those who have served Australia in times of war,” Mr. Hawker said.
