MORE THAN $271,200 FOR CREMATORIUM UPGRADE IN GERALDTON

Member for O'Connor, Wilson Tuckey, today announced Regional Partnerships program funding of more than $271,200 to upgrade the Geraldton Crematorium.

Mr Tuckey said the Australian Government funds would help Geraldton Cemetery Board purchase materials and labour to upgrade the existing building.

“The upgrade will see the existing crematorium turned into a facility that will provide the Geraldton community and surrounding regions with a comfortable and appropriate environment to say goodbye to loved ones.”

Mr Tuckey congratulated the local community for working together to access Regional Partnerships program funding.

“I would particularly like to thank the Mid West Gascoyne Area Consultative Committee for helping to bring this project to fruition.

“I would also like to acknowledge the financial support provided by Mid West Development Commission, City of Geraldton, Shire of Greenough, Shire of Northampton, Shire of Chapman Valley and the Geraldton Cemetery Board,” he said.

The Regional Partnerships program continues the Australian Government’s approach of working with local communities to support their ideas. A total of $360.9 million is available under the Regional Partnerships program from 2005-06 to 2008-09.

Mr Tuckey said the Regional Partnerships program would deliver benefits to communities well into the future, not only from program funding, but from the higher levels of economic activity and improved social amenity which the program was generating.

“Since its inception in July 2003, the Regional Partnerships program has, on average, attracted a further three dollars from other sources for every dollar invested by the Australian Government,” he said.

Communities should contact their local Area Consultative Committee* if they wish to seek funding through the Regional Partnerships program.
