Visit to Australia by United Nations Secretary-General

I am pleased to announce that His Excellency Kofi Anna n, Secretary-General of the

United Nations, accompanied by his wife, Mrs Nane Annan, has accepted the Prime

Minister’s invitation to visit Australia 18-22 February 2000. The government warmly

welcomes this, the Secretary-General’s first visit to Australia.

Australia and the United Nations have cooperated closely and effectively in East Timor. The Secretary-General has lent his strong personal support to Australia’s leadership of INTERFET and to resolution of the situation in East Timor. We are now working together to ensure a smooth transition from INTERFET to the UN Transitional Authority.

The government looks forward to discussing East Timor and other current issues with the Secretary-General when he meets the Prime Minister and key government ministers in Canberra.
