MINISTER FOR EMPLOYMENT, WORKPLACE RELATIONS AND SMALL BUSINESS

LEADER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

PARLIAMENT HOUSE

CANBERRA ACT 2600

7 May 1999

47/99

The People’s House

The Coalition Government will open up Parliament House to the Australian pub lic this weekend. For the first time this Sunday 9 May those areas of the Parliament which are usually closed to the public will be opened up for public view.

The Open Day will mark the 11 th anniversary of the opening of the building and visitors will be able to view such areas as the ground floor of the House of Representatives and Senate Chambers, the Cabinet Room and the Prime Minister’s Office.

There will also be the chance to see the opening of all the doors along the ceremonial spine which makes up the end of the Burley Griffin axis, starting at Mt Ainslie and following a line through the War Memorial, Old Parliament House and up through the front doors of Parliament House, through the Members’ Hall, Cabinet Room and into the Prime Minister’s Office.

The Coalition came to government on a platform of more open government and higher parliamentary standards and we have been achieving this objective through the implementation of continuous parliamentary reforms during the last three years. The Open House will be a wonderful opportunity for members of the public to have a look into their parliament and I would encourage everyone to take advantage of this, another good Coalition initiative.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Parliament House staff who have worked hard to make this Open Day possible.
