NEW INDUSTRY CODE FOR INSTALLATION OF MOBILE PHONE TOWERS

A new industry code for installation of mobile phone facilities would improve community consultation according to Member for Wannon - David Hawker.

Mr. Hawker said the code would pay particular attention to the location of mobile phone base stations.

He said the code would give communities new rights to information about the development of infrastructure like mobile phone base stations in their area.

“The code will improve consultation between mobile phone carriers, communities and local councils when carriers are deciding where to locate their base stations,” Mr. Hawker said.

“It will ensure carriers take account of the views of the community during the selection process, shows how residents can have their say when the stations are to be installed and what they can do if they have a complaint about a mobile phone carrier’s compliance with the code.

The Code aims to address community concerns about the design, operation and selection of sites for communications facilities.”

The new code requires mobile phone carriers to:

É Have written procedures for site selection; É Improve notification and community consultation procedures; É Design and operate base stations with the objective of minimising electromagnetic emissions; and

É Provide free information on electromagnetic radiation and provide electromagnetic emission reports on request.

Mr. Hawker said the Code was registered with the Australian Communications Authority, which meant carriers could face fines of up to $250,000 if they failed to comply.

He said the Code was available online at: www.aca.gov.au and further information was available by contacting the Australian Communications Industry Forum - www.acif.org.au or Mobile Carriers Forum - www.amta.org.au/mcf.

Release Ends.
