INDONESIA: A NEW BEGINNING

 

“Labor applauds President Suharto’s announcement that new presidential and vice presidential elections will be held and that he does not i ntend to recontest Indonesia’s presidency”, the Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, Laurie Brereton, said today.

 

“This is a tremendous development and has the potential to ensure a peaceful and orderly transition of government in Indonesia. It can open the way for a new beginning for the Republic of Indonesia.”

 

“The Australian Government should seize this historic opportunity to move forward in establishing a new relationship between Australia and Indonesia. This new relationship can be one of the keystones of regional security and prosperity. It must be a relationship firmly based on mutual respect and observance of universal human rights.”

 

“Indonesia faces a huge task of reconstruction. Australia has a vital role to play in assisting Indonesia to rebuild and move forward toward a prosperous and democratic future. Australia must rise to the challenge of engaging a new Indonesia to the lasting benefit of both our peoples.”
