Labor Welcomes HIsmelt Project in Western Australia

Labor welcomes the announcement by Rio Tinto that it will go ahead with the HIsmelt iron ore and steel plant in Kwinana, Western Australia.

The $1.2 billion project will help regional Australia and will create around 500 jobs.

The project is commercialising new Australian technology which will help develop a more efficient iron and steel industry. There is also a strong possibility that Rio Tinto will develop overseas investment opportunities through the technology.

In addition, the project will have significant environmental benefits due to its more efficient processing and recycling technologies. The project will have significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions than existing steel plants.

It is good to see Australian-developed technology being commercialised here and earning export dollars for Australia.

The combination of commercialising Australian technology, developing the steel industry and improving environmental performance is to be welcomed.
