MINERALS COUNCIL OF AUSTRALIA

MINERALS INDUSTRY WELCOMES NATIVE TITLE OUTCOME

980610

1 July 1998

The minerals industry is encouraged that the Commonwealth Government and Senator Harradine have reached agreement on the Native Title Amen dment Bill 1997, according to Mr Dick Wells, Executive Director of the Minerals Council of Australia.

“The difficulties experienced by the minerals industry have been with the current Act, not native title. The Native Title Act to date has clearly not worked.

“The minerals industry has sought amendments to fix the widely recognised problems associated with the Act. The amended Act will allow the industry to get on with its business in a way which respects the rights of others and continues to generate wealth and jobs for all Australians.

“While the amended Act will not address all of the problems, it will be a significant improvement.

“The minerals industry has demonstrated a willingness to work constructively with Aboriginal and other communities affected by its operations. It continues to respect the community values and the culture and heritage of indigenous people, while, at the same time, it works with Aboriginal people to provide economic benefits to their communities.

“The challenge now falls to the States to put in place effective State processes that comply with the Act’s requirements and provide for more certain land administration,” Mr Wells concluded.
