HELP FOR YOU AND YOUR NEW VALENTINE’S FAMILY

12 February 2007

The Minister for Human Services, Senator Ian Campbell, today encouraged families with new or changing circumstances to get a copy of the Child Support Agency’s popular free booklet Me and My Changing Family.

Senator Campbell said adults with a new valentine may find their partner has children - a situation that can provide complex and interesting challenges, particularly for adults who don’t have children of their own.

“The handy free booklet Me and My Changing Family has tips on building healthy relationships with other family members,” Senator Campbell said.

“Given one in four families in Australia are re-partnered with kids, there’s a good chance many new valentines will find themselves with new family circumstances.

“The booklet, launched in July last year, features the support of a wide group of researchers, stepparent associations and mothers’ and fathers’ groups.”

Senator Campbell said the booklet proved so popular, more had to be printed again shortly after its launch.

“New step-family situations or blended families can be challenging for everyone involved - parents, new partners, children and the extended family, but it’s not an uncommon experience,” Senator Campbell said.

“Knowing what challenges lie ahead and understanding that there’s help available can make a great difference and the situation more rewarding.

“The Australian Government’s Me and My… series of booklets which help and encourage strong and stable relationships and families.”

The booklet is on the CSA website or by phoning 1800 040 972.
