1 October 1999

Today marks the International Day of Older Persons, a day to acknowledge and cele brate the contribution of older Australians to our society.

“I congratulate Slim Dusty and the many other Senior Australians honoured last night at the inaugural Senior Australian of the Year Awards,” said Senator Chris Evans Shadow Minister for Family Services and the Aged today.

“The Award recipients and the hundreds of others nominated demonstrate the positive contribution made by older Australians in many fields, particularly in the voluntary community sector. The recipients highlight the active role that many older Australians play in our society.

“The International Year of Older Persons provides a valuable opportunity to reinforce positive images of older Australians and counter the stereotypes that are often portrayed in the media.

“I would also like to thank the National Australia Day Council for their role in administering the Senior Australian of the Year Awards.
