Press Release Ref: 1029 Published: 26/8/2003 Title: Job Seekers and Local Communities Win with Work for the Dole

Work for the Dole continues to go from strength to strength, generating both worthwhile work experience for job seekers and better services for local communities, the Member for Eden-Monaro, Gary Nairn, said today

“I welcome the Employment Services Minister, Mal Brough, advising me of 97 new Work for the Dole projects in Eden-Monaro,” he said.

“Local communities in Batehaven, Batemans Bay, Moruya, Bega, Bodalla, Dalmeny, Narooma, Tilba Tilba, and Tuross Head will benefit through a wide variety of tasks ranging from landscaping, construction and renovation work to assisting the Canteen Supervisor at Batemans Bay High School, Gary Nairn said.

“Work for the Dole is a Mutual Obligation initiative that allows participants to give something back to their local communities. Participants take part in a range of activities designed to both develop good work habits and also help their local communities through better facilities and services.

“Job seekers who participate in these projects gain a valuable connection and insight into the world of work.”

Gary Nairn said the success of Work for the Dole projects both in Eden-Monaro and across Australia is testimony to the creative input and support of local communities. “These projects show that Work for the Dole is a real community effort. Work for the Dole local sponsors and Community Work Coordinators who have organised these new projects have done an excellent job,” he said.

Mr Nairn said in this round of Work for the Dole, Mr Brough announced 400 new projects across Australia, providing places for 4920 job seekers.

He said since Work for the Dole commenced in late 1997, 14,000 projects had been approved, providing places for 240,000 Australians looking for work.
