MINISTER VISITS ALICE SPRINGS

The Minister for Veterans' Affairs and Minister Assisting the Min ister for Defence, Bruce Scott, will visit Alice Springs today, meeting with troops, civic leaders and ex-service organisations and touring the 1 Radar Surveillance Unit (1RSU).

I am delighted to be in Alice Springs, a town which has a strong Defence presence and a large veteran community," Mr Scott said.

"I am looking forward to meeting with the local branch of the RSL to discuss any issues they may have. RSL Sub-Branches around the country play an important role in supporting local veterans, and Alice Springs has a number of veterans who are involved in support activities."

The Minister will be meeting with a number of local ex-Service organisations including the Alice Springs RSL Sub-Branch, the RAR Association, the Legacy Women's Auxiliary, the Korean Veterans' Association, the Vietnam Veterans Federation and T&M Association.

"I particularly looking forward to meeting Mr Rowcliffe Thompson, a local ~ Veteran who is 103 years old," Mr Scott said.

"Mr Thompson recently received the Legion of Honour, France's highest military award, in recognition of his invaluable service on the Western Front."

The Minister has been visiting operational bases across the Territory during his three day tour.

"1RSU is a key operational establishment for surveillance in Australia's north and it is important I visit the base early in my term as Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence," Mr Scott said.
