$6.4 MILLION EXPLOSIVE ORDNANCE STORAGE PROJECT AT FORT DIRECTION, TASMANIA

The Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support, the Hon. Dr Mike Kelly AM MP and the Federal Member for Franklin, Julie Collins MP today announced the approval of a $6.4 million project to improve facilities and infrastructure at Fort Direction in Tasmania.

“The Fort Direction Explosive Ordnance Storage Upgrade project will provide Defence with new facilities that meet contemporary regulations for the safe storage of explosive ordnance,” Dr Kelly said.

“This project will also improve the occupational health and safety of personnel working at Fort Direction and enhance the security and safety of major hazard facilities at the base.”

Ms Collins said the construction work at Fort Direction will include three new explosive ordnance storehouses and an associated workshop. The project when underway will support the local community by providing work for tradespeople and labourers.

“This $6.4 infrastructure project will be a real boost for the local economy and the construction activity will go a long way to supporting local jobs and small businesses in southern Tasmania.”

Construction is planned to commence in mid-2009 and be completed by early 2010.
