SHADOW PRIMARY INDUSTRIES MINISTER TO VISIT NORTH QUEENSLAND

The Federal Shadow Minister for Primary Industries and Resources, Senator Kerry O’Brien, will spend five days in north Queensland consulting with key industries as part of the Federal Opposition’s comprehensive policy review process.

The visit will commence in Cairns tomorrow [Friday] and finish in Townsville next Tuesday.

The key focus of the visit will be to gain a first hand view of the problems confronting both the banana and sugar industries in North Queensland.

Senator O’Brien will address a rally of banana industry workers in Cairns tomorrow and meet with growers in Tully on Saturday.

The rally has been organised to protest against the proposed imports of bananas from the Philippines.

Senator O’Brien will visit Mossman on Friday, Malanda, Innisfail and Tully on Saturday, Ingham on Sunday, Townsville, and the Burdekin on Monday and Charters Towers on Tuesday.

In addition to the banana and sugar industries meetings with the fishing industry, environmental groups, Landcare groups, the dairy industry and the tobacco industry are also planned.
