Financial & Investment Info

People may now find free help through the maze of financial and investment terms and products according to Peter Andren, Member for Calare.

“The various financial investment options available to people wanting to know what to do with their money or facing retirement or redundancy can be bewildering at the best of times, said Mr Andren.

“Keeping up to date with changes to investments products as well as how they relate to social security and veterans’ affairs rules and taxation laws also usually requires expert advice.

“National Information Centre on Retirement Investments Inc (NICRI) is a consumer based organisation funded by the federal government to help the general public sort through and understand financial and investment information.

“While the NICRI does not undertake casework or advise how to invest your money, it does provide independent and confidential advice about how the different products work and what you should consider.

“With nearly 30,000 people in Calare aged over 55, this service will be particularly useful for those facing retirement by providing access to current and relevant information. This is vital in making informed decisions about what to do with your money.

“Those facing redundancy, or simply wishing to start seriously thinking about their financial futures, will also find this service of great help.

“Other aims of the service include promoting community awareness of consumer investment issues, examining unfairness in the market between consumers and providers of investment services and to advise government about investment issues.

“The service includes a range of plain-language leaflets covering issues from funeral bonds and prepaid plans, to various trusts, shares, insurance and annuities. There is also information about Powers of Attorney, estate planning, rollovers, superannuation and redundancy, as well as other subjects.

“This service provides important free and independent help in navigating your way through information that will help you make the best possible investment decisions you can.

“I would encourage people to contact the service with their questions as a first port of call.

“NICRI can also provide a speaker for presentation of seminars for retiree groups and organisations. You can also ring the service on 1800 020 110, or email NICRI@nicri.org.au. You can also access information at www.nicri.org.au,” Mr Andren said.
