$300,000 for grains industry

The Australian Government has provided the grains industry with $300,000 to strengthen its ability to manage its natural resource base.

Speaking at the Grains Industry Summit in Canberra today, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Peter McGauran, said the funding would allow the Grains Research & Development Corporation (GRDC) to identify environmental risks to the industry.

“Grain growers are as keen as the wider community to protect their natural resources and address environmental issues,” Mr McGauran said.

“They understand that dealing with issues such as water availability and reducing water consumption, maintaining soil quality, and climate variability are vital to their ongoing sustainability and profitability.

“This GRDC project will see an environmental plan developed and regional workshops held.

“The industry will also further develop a national database to streamline the information flow between farmers, natural resource management bodies, industry and government.

“The database will allow key trends, adoption levels and environmental and productivity indicators to be compared with the environmental plan.”

The funding has been allocated from the Landcare Sustainable Industry Initiatives programme, which supports the adoption and recognition of NRM best management practices.
