2001...Time to Recognise Our Local Volunteers

30 October, 2000

"Australians have a proud tradition of volunteering and taking their own time to make positive contributions to the community.

"There has been no better example of this than during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"Next year is the International Year of Volunteers and it will give each of us the opportunity to recognise the efforts of our own local volunteers," Dr Michael Wooldridge, the Federal MP for Casey said today.

The International Volunteering Day will be launched on 5 December this year and to coincide with the launch the Federal Government will make available grants of up to $5,000 for individual local initiatives that are consistent with the objectives of the Year.

Applications for the first round of grants are open until 10 January 2001, and Dr Wooldridge has encouraged local volunteer organisations to apply.

"Local volunteer organisations should definitely think about making an application for the funding and I'd like to assist in any way I can," Dr Wooldridge said.

Those interested should call Dr Wooldridge on 9724 9222, or visit his office in Croydon Road, Croydon.
