Northern Tasmanian fisheries will benefit from today’s announcement of the revised South East Region Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

Federal Member for Bass Michael Ferguson said that with the changes to the draft boundaries - first proposed in December - the revised network reduces the impact on the industry by more than 90 per cent on the initial proposal.

“It also completely secures our profitable and sustainable scallop industry,” he said.

“Businesses like George Town Seafood and Allan Barnett Seafood are able to rest easy. This announcement means that more than 120 jobs will be secured in our region.
