MEDIA RELEASE The Hon Wilson Tuckey MP Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government

17 February 2003 WT14/2003

Federal Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government, Wilson Tuckey has welcomed the release of a Parliamentary Inquiry Discussion Paper on Local Government and Cost Shifting.

In May 2002, Minister Tuckey asked that the Standing Committee on Economics, Finance and Public Administration, chaired by David Hawker, inquire into the role, community responsibilities and financial arrangements of Local Government.

"The response to this Inquiry has confirmed my concerns that Local Government, the key deliverer of services to local communities, is facing significant issues and challenges," Minister Tuckey said.

"The Committee has received more than 330 submissions, and also gathered information at a number of public hearings throughout metropolitan and regional Australia.

"It has found that cost shifting from the States is a real and serious concern for Local Government."

Minister Tuckey said the discussion paper provided a summary of the key issues raised with the Committee and set out a number of options to address those issues.

"I encourage councils and other interested parties to take the opportunity to read the discussion paper and respond to the options. This is the perfect opportunity to have your say and contribute towards a new era for local government", he said.

The discussion paper, titled At The Crossroads, is available at
