AUSTRALIAN SUPPORT FOR NAURU’S DEVELOPMENT

Several new bilateral aid investments were announced today between Australia and Nauru, delivering social, medical, and civic benefits to the people of Nauru.

During the sidelines of the 49th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Meeting, Assistant Minister for International Development, Senator the Hon Anne Ruston, launched three new programs.

Joining Nauru’s Minister for Health, Education and Home Affairs, the Hon Charmaine Scotty MP, Assistant Minister Ruston launched the 2018-2020 Gender Country Plan for Nauru under Australia’s Pacific Women Shaping Pacific Development program. The investment of $1 million by the Australian aid program will support women’s empowerment in Nauru over the next three years.

Non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death and disability in Nauru. Assistant Minister Ruston announced new Australian funding of more than $1.4 million over the next three years to support improved prevention and management of such diseases. It will be delivered by the World Health Organisation.

Assistant Minister Ruston also launched a new Australian investment to support Nauru hold elections in 2019. Australia will commit $631,925 to build the capacity of the Nauru Electoral Office, create a better-informed electorate, and implement more transparent and inclusive electoral processes. It will be delivered by the United Nations Development Programme, and is being co-funded by New Zealand.

Australia’s aid program to Nauru is estimated at $25.9 million in 2018-19. It supports jointly agreed development priorities - improving health and education services, strengthened public financial management and the development of essential and nation-building infrastructure.
