MEDIA RELEASE MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS ALEXANDER DOWNER FA2 9 January 2005

INDIAN OCEAN TSUNAMIS - SAM GREEN

I am pleased to pass on some welcome news about a South Australian man who had been believed missing in the aftermath of the Boxing Day Tsunamis.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade was today advised by Sam Green’s mother that Sam has been found by his brother Ben on the Mentawai Islands off the coast of Sumatra. She said she had spoken to Sam by phone and he told her he was safe.

She added that, because he was isolated from the outside world, he had been unaware of the Tsunami. She has asked the media to respect the family’s privacy. My department has offered continuing consular assistance should the family require it.
