Maguire trying to deceive the community: Mike Kelly The member for Eden-Monaro Mike Kelly has described as totally and demonstrably false a statement that he had “given back $11 million granted by the Howard Government” for upgrading Gocup Road.

Commenting on a report in the Tumut and Adelong Times on Monday (June 16), Dr Kelly said the State Member for Wagga, Daryl Maguire’s statement suggesting there had been money allocated for the Coalition’s election promise on Gocup Road was ludicrous.

“This demonstrates the continuing contempt the Coalition is showing the electorate by perpetuating the deceptions it peddled during last year’s campaign.

“The Howard government claimed the Gocup Road upgrade would be delivered in partnership with the NSW Government if it was re-elected.

“It didn’t explain how that would happen given that there was no declaration by the State Government of the road as a State Road, there was no agreement from the State Government that it would provide the remainder of the required funding, and there was no agreement as to precisely what works were to be done.

“Worst of all the Howard Government hadn’t set aside the $11m as it claimed. When caught out after the election on the fact that there was no agreement with the State the Howard Government said it had proceeded on the basis of ‘a wink and a nod’!”

Dr Kelly said that if this was true it would be bad enough, as an appalling approach to public administration, but it was in fact yet another “blatant deception”.

“The truth of the matter is there was never any $11m 'granted for the upgrade by the previous Howard government' as claimed by Daryl Maguire and I call on him to show some honesty on this issue,” he said.

“One of the main reasons the Howard government was defeated was that the public had had enough of the litany of deceptions that were peddled over the years.

“One would have thought Mr Maguire would have learnt something from this.”

Dr Kelly confirmed he supported a Gocup Road upgrade, but irresponsible statements like the one from the Member for Wagga was no substitute for first finding out what upgrade was needed, establishing its cost, working out what the stakeholders can bring to the table and then funding it.

“I have had discussions on the Gocup Road with my Federal and State colleagues and other stakeholders and am now proceeding with a final meeting of all parties to determine the way ahead, Dr Kelly said. “This meeting will occur in August.”
