DEFENCE COOPERATION WITH INDONESIA

The Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, Laurie Brereton, and the Shadow M inister for Defence, Stephen Martin, this afternoon reaffirmed Labor’s call for the complete suspension of bilateral defence cooperation with Indonesia.

“The Howard Government’s partial cancellation of defence exercises and review of other aspects of defence cooperation with Indonesia falls hopelessly short of what is required to send a clear and unambiguous message to Jakarta”, Mr Brereton said.

“It is extraordinary for the Government to claim it needs more time to ‘review’ the defence relationship”, Mr Martin said. “Labor called for such a review more than three months ago. Once again, the Government has completely failed to anticipate developments in East Timor and the necessary policy responses.”

Mr Brereton said this afternoon’s announcement “was clearly half-hearted and had all the hallmarks of a decision forced on a reluctant government by the pressure of circumstances and outraged public opinion.”
