ASSESSMENT REPORT RE LEASED FOR WEST RFA

The first volume of the Comprehensive Regional Assessment (CRA) for the West Regional Forest Agreement is now available to those interested in the future of the region’s native forests.

Commonwealth Minister for Forestry and Conservat ion, Wilson Tuckey, Commonwealth Environment Minister, Robert Hill, and Victorian Minister for Conservation and Land Management, Marie Tehan, released the report today.

Volume One of the report covers the assessments of the region’s economic, social and resource values, water and catchments, tourism and recreation, minerals and the first stage of biodiversity information. A second volume of the CRA will be published in September containing further environmental assessments, including that of the region’s national estate values.

The Ministers encouraged all interested groups and residents of the West RFA region to attend one of the public meetings scheduled in the region during August to discuss the assessment report, and the next stage in developing the Agreement.

Details of the public meetings are attached.

The RFA will provide 20 years’ certainty for the region and has three key objectives:

•  to protect environmental values in a Comprehensive, Adequate and Representative Reserve System based on nationally agreed criteria;

•  to encourage job creation and growth in forest-based industries, including wood products, tourism and minerals; and

•  to manage all native forests in an ecologically sustainable way.

The next stage of the process is the developmen t of a Directions Report, which will be released for public comment. The West region RFA is scheduled for completion by the end of 1999.
