Nation’s Top Vocational Education Students Honoured

17 September 2007

The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, and the Minister for Vocational and Further Education, the Hon Andrew Robb AO MP, today recognised 19 outstanding young Australians with the Prime Minister’s Awards for Skills Excellence.

These annual Awards acknowledge senior secondary vocational students who have demonstrated high achievement throughout their VET in Schools programme or Australian School-based Apprenticeship.

“Sound economic management over the past 11 years has meant there is increasing demand for skilled workers. Young Australians who undertake further education and training will find there is strong demand for their skills and they can look forward to strong employment and career options,” Minister Bishop said.

The winners were selected from 442 young Australians who received the annual Australian Vocational Student Prize. They each receive a framed certificate signed by the Prime Minister and a $2,000 cash prize.

Mr Robb said the Awards highlight the Australian Government’s commitment to vocational and technical education, as evidenced by the record $11 billion funding being invested in the sector between 2006 and 2009 - the largest investment by any government in Australia’s history.

The Minister for Vocational and Further Education the Hon Andrew Robb MP said:

“As I move about the country I am always so impressed with the dedication and commitment of young people to pursuing careers in vocational and technical education. To be able to do what you are best at and to gain recognition for it is what these Awards which recognise the “cream of the crop” are all about. It will also be a great encouragement to other young people to pursue these careers and fulfil their hopes and dreams.”
