Equipment to support local volunteers in the Johnstone Shire Media Release - 11 May 2004

Two organisations in the Johnstone Shire will receive a total of $6,028.18 from the Australian Government to purchase much needed equipment for local volunteers, Leader of The Nationals in the Senate Ron Boswell announced today.

The funding is part of more than $4 million allocated nationally through the 2004 Volunteer Small Equipment Grants programme.

The successful projects in the region include:

• $3,757.27 to the Babinda District Community Association for the purchase of a fridge, urn, digital camera and projector • $2,270.91 to the Etty Bay Surf Life Saving Club for the purchase of a computer package and printer/scanner/copier

Additional GST payments will be provided to GST registered organisations.

Senator Boswell said that 2082 volunteer organisations across Australia have been allocated up to $5,000 to purchase a wide variety of small equipment items.

“Volunteers are often the unsung heroes of our communities,” he said. “They are ordinary people who give up their valuable time to help their own communities in all sorts of fields - like family and community support, emergency services, the environment, sport and tourism.

“This funding will help make the valuable work done by dedicated volunteers easier, safer and more enjoyable.

“Each purchase will make a significant difference to the work of volunteers, and is equipment that organisations may not have been able to otherwise afford.”

In this round of funding, 24 volunteer organisations in the Kennedy electorate received a total of $45,208.

Senator Boswell said this latest round of funding is the fifth time the Australian Government has committed its financial support directly to volunteers since 2001, bringing the total funding to over $19 million, distributed to approximately 8,500 community organisations.

“The Australian Government is committed to supporting the important work volunteers do for the community.”
