Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC)

7 September 1999

Time’s almost up for Indigenous people wanting to contest the October 9 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islande r Commission’s Regional Council elections with nominations closing nationally at 5p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday).

ATSIC Chairman Gatjil Djerrkura said it was vital for would-be election candidates to act now if they wanted to join the race for Council and Commission positions.

Candidates must be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and they can only contest positions in the Regional Council ward in which their home address is registered on the Commonwealth Electoral Roll.

Candidates were also required to have their nomination forms signed by at least four Indigenous people who are registered on the Commonwealth Electoral Roll as living in their ward.

Candidates must then return their forms with a non-refundable $50 nomination fee to the AEC office of the Regional Returning Officer for the Ward in which they are standing.

This must be done by no later than 5p.m. on Wednesday, 8 September 1999.

Mr Djerrkura said: “If you leave your nomination bid until late in the day you risk missing out altogether if there were any last minute hitches.

“If one or more of your nominees were found to be ineligible you may not have time to make alternative arrangements unless you act early.”

Nomination forms are available from Regional Returning Officers and Community Electoral Information Officers at 35 Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) offices around Australia.

They are also available from ATSIC offices across the country and are being widely distributed to other Indigenous organisations and communities.

Forms are also available on the AEC’s internet home page at
