LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION

STATEMENT BY THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION THE HON SIMON CREAN MP

NATIONAL YOUTH WEEK

I am delighted to participate in Youth Week 2002.

Labor’s spokesperson on Youth, Nicola Roxon, has co-ordinated a program where Labor MPs will put themselves in the shoes of their younger constituents and give themselves some work experience; from hairdressing to carpentry to working on a supermarket checkout.

On Monday I will be in Rockhampton with Member for Capricornia Kirsten Livermore, where I will participate in a Youth Forum and Kirsten will do a ‘job swap’ and work on a remote area planning development board.

On Thursday I will spend the day with the Member for Bass, Michelle O’Byrne in Launceston where we will look at IT opportunities for young people in her electorate.

On Friday I will meet with Nicola Roxon in Gellibrand and receive feedback from Labor MPs all over the country about their activities in Youth Week 2002.

As part of my task in modernising the Labor Party, I am convinced that Labor members should spend time where people work, study and relax so they can provide feedback to party leaders. This project is an important example of how this can be done

Senior Shadow Ministers Kelvin Thomson (Environment) and Wayne Swan (Family and Community Services) and Tanya Plibersek, Member for Sydney and Christian Zahra, Member for McMillan will also participate in the project.

I look forward to receiving the reports of my colleagues on Friday and hearing the voices and opinions of many young Australians.
