WA NATIVE TITLE AGREEMENT

I welcome today’s historic agreement to formally recognise native title over a large area of Western Australia.

The consent determination is the most extensive native title determination so far in Australia and has been made possible by an agreement between the Western Australian Government and the Spinifex People.

It formalises the interaction between the native title and non-native title interests in a 55,000 square kilometre area of WA.

I commend the parties for reaching agreement through a spirit of cooperation.

Such an agreement was made possible by the Government's 1998 amendments to the Native Title Act 1993. The amendments have streamlined native title processes. They give industry and indigenous groups a mechanism to avoid the need to go to court and to enable them to resolve issues in the spirit of cooperation.
