Media Release Kevin Andrews Minister for Ageing

Professor David Celermajer, Professor of Medicine at the University of Sydney and Director of Research and Cardiologist at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, has been awarded the prestigious 2002 Commonwealth Health Minister's Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Research .

The Federal Minister for Ageing, the Hon Kevin Andrews, presented the award on behalf of the Federal Health Minister, Senator Kay Patterson, at a Medical Research Week dinner in Melbourne tonight.

The award, introduced in 2000, recognises a distinguished Australian health or medical researcher's outstanding achievement and potential. Past winners have been Dr Douglas Hilton and Associate Professor Philip Hogg.

"This award recognises Professor Celermajer's outstanding record of achievement in health and medical research in the area of cardiovascular medicine," Mr Andrews said.

"His major contributions have included the development of a method for non-invasive detection of early arterial disease in children and young adults and the identification that supplementation with folic acid can improve arterial health in adults with vascular disease.

"This work has had a major impact on public health nationally and internationally, including contributing to important changes regarding public exposure to passive smoke.''

The Health Minister's Award for Excellence includes a commemorative medal and a cheque for $50,000 to recognise outstanding individual achievement in health and medical research in Australia.
