THE HON AMANDA RISHWORTH MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT SHADOW MINISTER FOR VETERANS’ AFFAIRS

SHADOW MINISTER FOR DEFENCE PERSONNEL MEMBER FOR KINGSTON

CONFIRMED: LIBERAL GOVERNMENT FREEZE ON ALLIED HEALTH HURTING OUR VETERANS

Reports this evening that veterans are being turned away from allied services is confirming what Labor had warned about all along; the Turnbull Government’s unfair freeze on allied health would prevent veterans from accessing the services they so dearly need.

The Turnbull Government’s Medicare freeze impacts those veterans who access health services which are paid for by DVA, with the Repatriation Medical Fee Schedule (RMFS) being linked to Medicare rebates.

As the Repatriation Medical Fee Schedule is unable to increase while the Medicare rebates are frozen, veterans are unable to be charged a gap, forcing clinicians to turn veterans away.

Labor warned over a year ago of the nasty effect the Liberal Government’s freeze would have on our veterans and the Minister did not listen.

Whilst the Minister’s own Department was forced to acknowledge the overwhelming evidence that individuals would suffer as a consequence they did not believe this to be a ‘wide-spread issue impacting veterans’ and war widows ability to access clinically necessary treatment.’

It is clear that from this evenings reports the evidence is to the contrary.

The Liberal Government’s unfair freeze continues to hurt our veterans and the Turnbull Government sit idle.

With three Ministers in three months, veterans have lost hope that the Turnbull Government takes them seriously.
