GOVERNMENT DISAPPOINTS AGAIN ON CENTRELINK DEBT DISASTER

I was disappointed with the Minister for Human Services’ response to my motion today regarding the Centrelink Debt debacle.

Minister Alan Tudge continues to refuse to acknowledge there is a very serious problem and to commit to take decisive action to remedy it.

The undeniable fact is that Centrelink is sending out thousands of notices each week to people who either don’t owe Centrelink anything, owe less than what Centrelink think, or don’t know what they might owe because they can’t locate the relevant paperwork from past years of employment.

The Minister’s defence of the debt recovery program was inconsistent with what I’m hearing from the community. I’m still in no doubt that the program is deeply flawed and in urgent need of being replaced by a new arrangement that’s timely, accurate and fair.
