SENATOR THE HON. ERIC ABETZ LIBERAL SENATOR FOR TASMANIA

MEDIA RELEASE

05 February 2017

Make textbooks cheaper for Students and Parents

Tasmanian Liberal Senator Eric Abetz has today supported a call from the Tasmania University Union for the Government to abolish Parallel Import Restrictions on textbooks as a matter of urgency - something costing students on average $200 each year.

The abolition of these restrictions has been recommended by six reviews, including recently by the Productivity Commission and the Harper Competition Review.

“The urgent removal of these protectionist restrictions would save parents and students on average $200 a year, something that would assist in reducing cost of living pressures,” Senator Abetz said today.

“While I am pleased the Government has indicated its openness to remove the restrictions, this is something that we should be seeking to progress before the start of the academic year.”

“I congratulate the Tasmania University Union for taking this issue on and being a strong voice on campus in removing these archaic restrictions,” Senator Abetz said.

The Tasmania University Union President, Clark Cooley, is also available for comment on 0437 688 317.
