BUSINESS LEADERS SEEKING GOVERNMENT ACTION ON CARBON - OAKESHOTT

THE Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry is not speaking for all businesses in its criticism of carbon pricing, Independent MP for Lyne Robert Oakeshott said today.

Mr Oakeshott said public comments from the ACCI today about carbon pricing were contrary to a consensus document signed in May by members of the National Business Leaders Forum on Sustainable Development, calling for a carbon price and action on climate change.

“Business leaders at companies including BP Australasia, Visy Industries and EnergyAustralia have already reached consensus with environmental groups on the importance of a price on carbon,” Mr Oakeshott said.

“A document tabled at Tuesday’s meeting of the Multi-Party Climate Change Committee (see attached) made the clear point that business leaders are waiting to see action in this area and that is what we are trying to achieve.

“If Australian business leaders and Australian environmentalists can reach consensus, then parliamentarians should be considering the recommendations put forward in this document,” Mr Oakeshott said.
