Greens welcome Productivity Commission report on aged care

The Australian Greens have welcomed the release of the draft Productivity Commission report ‘Caring For Older Australians’ and will continue to push for comprehensive reform our aged care sector.

“We need fundamental reform of our aged care system to cater for future needs and reduce the pressures being dealt with by care providers and consumers on a daily basis,” Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson for Health and Ageing said today.

“The approach taken by the Productivity Commission is encouraging, with a wide range of options and reforms considered. This is scope we need when considering effective reforms, rather than the ineffective stop-gap approach taken by successive Governments, which has seen our aged care crisis worsen considerably.

“We will now be carefully examining the report and continuing our dialogue with the aged care sector, older Australians and their families.

“What must not be lost in this discussion is the fact that effective reforms are needed as a matter of urgency.

“The crisis in aged care is already here, with the sector facing daily challenges to provide high quality services, adequately pay staff and undertake much needed infrastructure development. Delays to the reform process will only see these problems worsen.

“The Australian Greens are committed to developing and resourcing aged care services to keep older Australians healthy and improve their quality of life.

“The Productivity Commission’s report is an important part of the aged care reform process and we will continue to work hard with aged care providers and older Australians to see their needs are met into the future,” Senator Siewert concluded.
