M e d i a R e l e a s e THE HON. WARREN SNOWDON MP Federal Member for Lingiari 1st December 2008 REPORT CARD ON THE EDUCATION REVOLUTION The next chapter of the Labor's Education Revolution was announced at COAG over the weekend. The Member for Lingiari, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP has welcomed the announcement of the four year $42.2 billion National Education Agreement - an unprecedented investment in schooling. “This is great news for Lingiari, as it will mean more money for schools out bush,” said Mr Snowdon. "As a government, we are committed to delivering quality education and overcoming the extreme disadvantage faced in many remote communities.” This package will deliver greater transparency in schools, improve teacher quality, improve literacy and numeracy and lift up educational outcomes at the most disadvantaged schools in this nation. In the past 12 months, Labor has set about delivering an Education Revolution. The Computers in Schools initiative has been particularly beneficial in Lingiari, with 30 schools successful in the first round of funding. “And now an additional $807 million has been allocated to States and Territories for legitimate on-costs that will be paid before the end of the 2008-09 financial year,” said Mr Snowdon. “This funding will cover the computers purchased through Round One as well as future on-costs associated with subsequent rounds.” In addition, substantial money has also been allocated to Charles Darwin University and the Batchelor Institute, with each receiving $1.3 million and $400,000 respectively for major capital works. The COAG plan demonstrates that this government is serious about delivering the foundations for long-term education reform. Media Contact: Kate Sieper 0488 484 689
