Senator Nick Sherry, Minister for Superannuation and Corporate Law has launched a new fifty cent coin this month to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of yacht Australia II’s historic win in the America’s Cup in 1983.

“On this day, twenty five years ago, one of the most famous and proudest sporting moments in Australian history took place. In celebration of this, the Royal Australian Mint has released a collectible coin which gives each Australian the opportunity to hold a piece of history in their hands,” Minister Sherry said.

Australia II’s victory is a testament to Australian innovation, technology, design and teamwork, which brought competitive sailing to the world’s attention.

On September 26, 1983, after weeks of speculation and controversy, the Australia II KA - 6, achieved a victory over the Liberty US-40. Skippered by John Bertrand and with its famous Lexcen-designed winged keel, the yacht ended the United States’ 132 year strangle hold on the America’s Cup - the longest wining streak in modern sporting history.

The new uncirculated coin has been designed by Caitlin Goodall from the Royal Australian Mint and it captures Australia II under full sail, illustrating the starboard side of the vessel with spinnaker and mainsail carrying the boat to victory. A unique magnified underwater view captures the controversial winged keel as taken from technical drawings.

The making of the coin and an interview with Senator Sherry will feature in a special behind-the-scenes filming at the Royal Australian Mint on WIN Television’s program The Susie Show on Tuesday October 7 2008 at 1pm. The Royal Australian Mint has also created a feature website, where visitors

can view footage of the America’s cup races.
