Minister Kemp tables soccer review

The Federal Minister for the Arts and Sport Senator Rod Kemp, today tabled in Parliament the report of the Independent Soccer Review.

'Soccer is the sleeping giant of Australian sport with many strengths, particularly the hundreds of thousands of people involved at the grass roots level.

'This report shows that those grass roots participants are deeply concerned about the lack of success of the game in Australia. It's time to fix the game and awaken that sleeping giant," he said.

'The plan drawn up by David Crawford's committee is the blueprint for improving the governance of soccer and quite clearly represents the view of the majority of people involved at the grass roots level.

Senator Kemp said the report is a very positive development and urged the Australian soccer community to embrace reform.

'I am quite encouraged that people of the calibre of Frank Lowy, Ron Walker and John Singleton, who have skills and experience that cannot be challenged, have put themselves forward to lead the proposed Interim board.'

Senator Kemp said the Federal Government would be monitoring the reaction of the soccer community and that a review of the Government funding of soccer would be based on the response to the review's recommendations.

'I congratulate David Crawford and his review team on what has been a comprehensive process that has sought input from all levels of soccer - from the mums and dads right through to FIFA.'

Senator Kemp emphasised that review chairman, David Crawford, has led a knowledgeable and experienced team and produced an independent report. David Crawford has a proven track record of governance reform, including his successful review of the AFL in the 1980's.
