Their Excellencies the Governor-General, Major General Michael Jeffery and Mrs Marlena Jeffery formally registered as organ donors today and urged people to consider doing the same.

“All Australians have a role to play in making transplants available to those who need them,” General Jeffery said.

“People have the opportunity to share the gift of life, enabling others to enjoy relatively normal, happy, active and productive lives. The key steps are to consider the benefits, consult your family and make the commitment by registering - consider, consult and commit.”

“By working with Transplant Australia and through this contribution, Marlena and I hope to see Australia become a world leader in making transplants readily available,” General Jeffery said.

Several children who have received an organ transplant joined the Governor-General and Mrs Jeffery for the announcement and the opportunity to fish off the wharf at Admiralty House in Sydney. Fishing is one of Australia’s most popular recreational pursuits.

One of the children at the announcement is among more than 1,000 participants in the Australian Transplant Games to be officially opened by the Governor-General later this month in Adelaide.

Chairman of Transplant Australia, Marvin Weinman said: “We appreciate the commitment demonstrated by the Governor-General and Mrs Jeffery. With their support we hope in the not too distant future, to see all Australians in need of a transplant, able to receive one”.

The Governor-General is Patron of Transplant Australia, the largest recipient support organisation in Australia, with over 5,000 members.
