Veterans Grants for Oberon

Wednesday, November 10, 2010

Veterans and ex-service men and women in Oberon will benefit immensely from the recently released Saluting Their Service grant funding, Federal Member for Calare, John Cobb, said today.

“In Oberon, veterans’ organisations will benefit from a total of $5,050 in Saluting Their Service grants.

“Saluting Their Service grants aim to highlight the service and sacrifice of Australia’s servicemen and women in wars, conflicts and peace operations.

“The grants also promote both an appreciation and understanding of the duties performed by those who served and assisted in shaping our nation.

“Saluting Their Service provides opportunities for communities, organisations and individuals to play an active role in commemoration activities and to ensure that the service of today’s Australian Defence Force is properly recognised.”

Veterans’ organisations that will receive funding include the Oberon Council and Oberon RSL Sub-Branch.

The Oberon Council will use this money to build a new Memorial Park and the funding received by the RSL Rub-Branch will go towards holding a dedication service and unveiling of the Ataturk Stone in the Oberon Memorial Park.

Mr Cobb said these grants will enable appropriate acknowledgement and respect for the roles played by men and women from our local community who are serving or have served our nation.

“I am pleased that funding is still available to assist veterans’ organisations in our local community.

“However, I am concerned that funding cut backs at the Australian War Memorial, in particular, may jeopardise commemorations at a national level.

“The Australian War Memorial’s touring exhibitions and school holiday programmes, as well as preparations for commemorating the Centenary of Anzac, are at risk because of Labor’s reckless spending and budget cuts to the Australian War Memorial”, Mr Cobb said.

The Oberon RSL Sub-Branch will be conducting a Remembrance Day service on 11th November at the Oberon War Memorial 10.45am - 11.15am.
