Cobb Supports Farmers while Minister still Missing in Action

Tuesday, December 21, 2010

After visits to flood and rain affected cropping areas in recent weeks, the Shadow Minister for Agriculture, John Cobb, has been looking for solutions to the current crisis facing our farmers while the Minister responsible is still MIA.

Last week along side Coalition Members, Mr Cobb called for the Federal Government to reinstate Exceptional Circumstances (EC) in areas where it has ceased and also to extend EC in areas which are set to lose it in March 2011.

This week Mr Cobb spoke with regional managers of the four major banks and was reassured that they will continue to support the agricultural sector.

“The banks are well aware of the risks associated with farming - many of which are out of farmers control and I have been assured that the banks will continue their support of the farming community.

“What farmers need is support from their banks, what they do not need is banks pushing up interest rates and making a tough job even tougher.”

Mr Cobb said he also encouraged farmers to utilise the Rural Financial Counselling Service for further assistance with financial support.

“The most appalling aspect of this crisis is that while I have been on the ground assessing the situation, talking with farmers and communities, the Minister responsible has yet to respond to the crisis that is currently affecting QLD, NSW and VIC.

“This is a stressful time of the year for farmers, the people of regional Australia are crying out for help and are waiting for the government to reveal what forms of assistance will be available.

“The Gillard Government has once again failed the people of regional Australia,” Mr Cobb said.
