Queensland Flood Crisis

Monday, January 10, 2011

Queensland is currently being devastated by the worst flooding in seventy years, with heavy rain continuing in south eastern Queensland causing more destruction and hindering clean up efforts.

This week in my capacity as Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Food Security, I will be visiting flood affected communities in Queensland to assess the damage to prime agricultural land.

For agriculture alone the damage bill is expected to be well into the billions. Crops have been inundated by water, cattle and sheep have been left stranded and many communities isolated as a result of the crisis.

My visit to Queensland will give me the opportunity to speak with local farmers and community leaders to gauge the level of damage to the agricultural industry.

I will also be looking at what additional forms of assistance will be required, both short and long term, in the wake of this disaster for farmers and agricultural communities.
