DISASTER RECOVERY FUNDS FOR WOLLONGONG COUNCIL

Minister for Justice Michael Keenan and NSW Minister for Finance, Services and Property Dominic Perrottet today announced funding of $50,000 in recovery assistance to the Wollongong City Council for damage caused by the March 2014 storms.

Minister Keenan said assistance was being provided through the jointly-funded Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).

“The Australian and New South Wales Governments are committed to working together to ensure the Wollongong community has the assistance it needs to recover from the March 2014 storms,” Mr Keenan said.

“The NDRRA program provides councils with the confidence to proactively step into recovery mode, restoring the community to its pre-disaster state without serious financial detriment.”

Minister Perrottet said the funds would reimburse Wollongong City Council for costs associated with debris clean-up from essential public assets and emergency restoration works.

“The $50,000 payment announced today will help with the cost of clearing storm debris from the Council’s essential storm water assets,” Mr Perrottet said.

“Natural disasters are always a challenge for communities. This funding demonstrates the commitment of both our governments to invest in the recovery of disaster affected communities by ensuring damaged assets can be restored.”
