$7.1 million to boost disaster resilience in the Northern Territory

Minister for Justice Michael Keenan and the Northern Territory’s Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Nicole Manison today announced $7.1 million in funding to help communities in the Northern Territory enhance their resilience to natural disasters.

Mr Keenan said the $2.6 million in commonwealth funding being provided to the Northern Territory is part of the $52 million national partnership agreement on natural disaster resilience.

“Preparing for, withstanding and recovering from disasters is not something the government can do alone - we need everyone in the community to get involved,” Mr Keenan said.

“That is why we work with state and territory governments through the national partnership agreement, to support local projects that mitigate local risks and contribute to safer, more sustainable communities.”

Ms Manison added that the $2.6 million in Commonwealth funding will be used to fund natural disaster resilience activities of both territory-wide and local community significance.

This includes projects that will support volunteers, raise community awareness on natural disaster risks and develop strategies to increase the capabilities of emergency responders.

The NT’s $4.5 million component will fund the cyclone shelter for the Ramingining community at the local school.

Applications for the programmes are now open and will close midnight Sunday 8 January 2016. Programmes include:

 Disaster Resilience Fund (DRF)  Disaster Resilience Emergency Volunteer Fund (DREVF)  Territory Risk Priority Project Fund (TRPPF)
