JUST TRANSITION IS CRUCIAL

Today’s report from the ACTU puts to bed the Liberal Party notion that there is a conflict between supporting workers and supporting a clean energy transition.

Labor has always known how crucial a Just Transition for energy workers is.

Coal-fired power plants employ thousands of people around the country and as these ageing stations inevitably approach closure, it is imperative we have a government in place that looks out for these workers and their communities.

The Turnbull Government has no plan to manage the transition of our electricity sector; a transition that's inevitable due to the imperative to cut emissions as well as the ageing of coal fired power stations.

They have put a clean energy transition and a Just Transition for workers in the too hard basket.

The ACTU and its affiliates are clear that workers need a just and orderly transition to a clean energy economy - what hurts workers and communities most are unplanned, ad-hoc closures that don’t come with well thought out government support.

Workers want their future safeguarded; they want a government with a plan that has a just transition for themselves and their communities at its core.

As evidenced by the ‘Our Energy Future’ report released yesterday, industry is on the same page as workers, calling for a national clean energy plan including a just transition for workers and their communities.

We can’t allow the unplanned closures experienced in Pt Augusta and now Hazelwood to continue happening; workers and communities deserve real support.

And industry deserves policy certainty so they can invest, modernise our energy system and create jobs.

It’s becoming increasingly clear neither workers nor industry will get what they deserve from the Turnbull Government while it’s beholden to the lunar right.

Energy sector workers, their communities and the whole country deserve better.
