Man charged over cocaine smuggling

A 32-year-old Brazilian national has been charged for allegedly attempting to bring cocaine through Brisbane

International Airport yesterday (Sunday 30 October 2016).

Australian Border Force (ABF) officers targeted the man for a baggage examination after the passenger arrived

from the United Arab Emirates.

During their examination, officers x-rayed one of the man’s bags before deconstructing its lining and uncovering a

white powder.

Initial testing of the substance returned a positive result for cocaine.

The estimated total weight of the substance, including the weight of the suitcase, is approximately six kilograms.

Further forensic testing will be carried out to determine the exact weight of the substance.

The matter was referred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) who charged the man with importing a l marketable

quantity of a border controlled drug, namely cocaine, contrary to section 307.2 of the

Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth).

The maximum penalty for this offence is 25 years imprisonment.

The man is next scheduled to appear at Brisbane Magistrates Court today (Monday 31 October 2016).
