The Hon Bob Baldwin MP Federal Member for Paterson

9 July 2008

Paterson MP Bob Baldwin is urging people with chronic dental issues to take advantage of the Medicare Dental Scheme - while they still can.

The Rudd Labor Government’s attempt to scrap the scheme was thwarted in the Senate meaning eligible people can continue to receive a treatment and rebate from Medicare.

“The Coalition’s Medicare Dental Scheme has benefited a huge number of Australians in the 6 months it has been operating and I personally know of several people in my own electorate who have taken it up,” said Mr Baldwin.

The Coalition program allows patients with chronic and complex dental health conditions to see the dentist of their choice following a GP referral and provides up to $4250 for treatment over 2 years.

“The Rudd Government has no plans to replace the scheme,” said Mr Baldwin.

“Their solution is to simply throw money at the states, asking them to fix the problems. This will force patients in need to join public waiting lists where they may wait for months for treatment in the already-overcrowded state-run Public Dental schemes.

‘I encourage those with chronic and complex dental health issues to visit their GP to discuss a treatment plan as soon as possible while this scheme is still operating so they are not left to rely on the inadequate state dental service.”
