Wed, 16th April 2008 RUDD GOVT CLIMATE LAZY ON CLEAN COAL - TIME FOR A CLEAN ENERGY TARGET

The Hon Greg Hunt MP Shadow Minister for Climate Change, Environment and Urban Water (to 22 September 2008)

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd would do well to heed calls from the World Wildlife Fund and others for his Government to accelerate deployment of carbon capture and storage technology.

With China and India due to bring 800 coal and gas fired power stations online over the next five years, carbon capture will be an indispensable element of any global solution to climate change.

For ideological reasons, the Rudd Government is locking Australia and, in turn, countries such as China and India out of the early adoption of clean coal and gas.

By excluding clean coal and gas from a national clean energy target , the Rudd Government is deferring the adoption of this technology indefinitely.

It's time for a clean energy target that includes incentives to bring on clean coal and gas by 2020.

There will be no global climate change solution without clean coal and gas and no long-term economic provision of clean energy for Australia unless we clean up our power stations.

Unless the Government ensures there are incentives to adopt clean coal technology, it will simply not be brought online.

The Rudd Government must commit to including clean coal and gas in a clean energy target or risk being seen by the world as climate lazy.

By insisting on a renewable-only target, this Government is not only deferring the inevitable introduction of clean coal and gas, it is failing in its obligation to future generations.
