Fri, 23rd May 2008 MR RUDD PLAYS A VERY CLEVER AND TRICKY GAME OF POLITICS

The Hon Peter Dutton MP Shadow Minister for Finance, Competition Policy and Deregulation

Shadow Minister for Finance, Competition Policy and Deregulation, the Hon Peter Dutton MP, has today called on Mr Rudd to act decisively on rising petrol prices.

''Mr Rudd claims he can do no more to help families cope with rising fuel costs, and is distancing the Government from the issue.

''The reality is that the Government can do more. It can act decisively and give motorists some relief. Mr Rudd can act and he is choosing not to.

''Australians were promised cheaper petrol by Labor before the last election.

''But so far they have delivered nothing.

''There is no evidence to suggest that FuelWatch will put any downward pressure on petrol prices. What we do know is that it will stop any heavy discounting and reduce competitive pressures in the market, and reduce the opportunities for families to fill up at the bottom of the price cycle.

''Fortunately for motorists, the Government is sitting on its hands for eight months before it implements the scheme.

''Australian motorists can quite rightly feel cheated by this Government as all they have ended up with is a Government that is just standing by and watching.

''Mr Rudd plays a very clever and tricky game of politics. He is promising so much, but delivering so little.''
